We Need Your Consent!
The West Main Church of Christ is now engaged in a blessed time. We are blessed because as a congregation we are in the process of nominating additional new elders and deacons. Last Sunday we announced the nominations of Dan Beeks and Ron Zielke for elders, and Larry Albright, Josh Johnson, and Brian Pannell for deacons. Our current elders are asking us a congregation to participate in this process of nomination.
In the New Testament there is a clear precedent of joint participation in the appointment of congregational leaders. An individual may possess all the qualifications to be a leader in the congregation, already be serving well in the area where leadership is being called for, but until there is congregational recognition, a leader one cannot be. One cannot lead where no one is willing to follow. For instance, the selection of the seven men in Acts chapter six was confirmed by the twelve apostles after names were put forward by the members of the Jerusalem congregation. Paul, Barnabas, Silas, and Judas were chosen for a special mission to the Gentiles by “the apostles and elders, [and] the whole church” (Acts 15:22). Paul and Barnabas were called to missionary service by the Holy Spirit, and the church at Antioch recognized their calling by fasting and praying before “they placed their hands on them and sent them off” (Acts 13:1-3). Timothy was called to service as an evangelist when the “whole body of elders laid their hands on” him and he gave his “good confession in the presence of many witnesses” (1 Tim 4:14; 6:12). Finally, even outside the cannon of the New Testament we read of how the early church in 96 AD installed men who “had been appointed by the apostles and afterward by other eminent men with the consent of the whole church” (1 Clement 44).
The elders of the West Main Church of Christ are asking for the consent of the congregation for Dan Beeks, Ron Zielke, Larry Albright, Josh Johnson, and Brian Pannell to serve as elders and deacons among us. After the sermon this coming Sunday, May 22nd, each member of good standing in the congregation who is at least eighteen years old is being asked to take and complete the nomination form. On the nomination form you will find the list of suggested names where you will be asked for your consent. Additionally, the nomination form will give you the opportunity to suggest other individuals for elders and deacons for consideration. You have up to two weeks to hand in your form acknowledging whether or not you consent to the men put forward to be elders and deacons. Please turn in your consent forms to our elder, Gerry Flock. Additionally, if you feel the need to discuss your concerns and considerations more fully, all the elders will be available to receive your input.
Finally, please take this responsibility seriously. We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God written under the guidance and direction of the Holy Spirit. We believe according to this Sacred Word that the Holy Spirit is the One who moves among us calling forth leaders for His people. The appointment of elders and deacons is a movement of God among us. The elders of West Main are calling upon us as a church to recognize the good work our Lord is doing among us. Please participate with the whole church as we wholly commit ourselves to recognize whom the Holy Spirit is calling to servant-leadership among us.
