PASSION
I drive my kids to school. Many mornings, my daughter is a little slower in getting ready, so I’ll drive my son to school first and then swing back to get her. When we first started this routine, she thought it was fun to stand at the end of our driveway and wait. As soon as my car came into sight, she’d wave and smile and start waving her thumb. She thought it was so funny for me to pick her up this way. She was so excited.
Today was no different. As I drove up, there she was all smiles and waves and hitching thumbs. When I rolled the window down and asked if she needed a lift, she cracked up and jumped in and kissed me. What struck me about this is the fervor and energy she still puts into this routine. She acts it out each day as if it’s the first time! She hasn’t lost any passion. It hasn’t become old, boring or goofy. There is no apathy. In her mind, she is a hitchhiker being picked up by her daddy! And she still loves it. It is truly beautiful when you think about it.
Why can’t we act this way in our relationship with our Savior? Do you remember when it all began? Do you remember your salvation? Do you remember the feeling after being baptized? I do! I was SO excited! I was on fire. I smiled, sang, danced and was full of joy!
So what happened? Why is it that now, often times, we are dull, passionless, and generally apathetic? LIFE HAPPENED. Many things cause us to lose fervor: Sickness, death, financial pressures, jobs, relationships, etc. But the truth is this: we should still be as excited today as we were in the beginning! NOTHING has changed! Jesus still died for our sins, he still loves us in spite of ourselves, and He still meets us every morning, right where we are with our thumbs up, waiting for Him…and He NEVER fails to show up!
I think of the verse in Revelation 2:4 that says, “But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.” Jesus was reminding the church in Ephesus that they may still have the right motions, but they’d lost the right emotions! He was calling them back to the days when their love for Jesus was an all-consuming passion!
May we all be reminded of the same thing today. May we all learn to fall in love with Jesus again!

THE THRONE OF GOD:
A SYMBOL OF LOVE AND FAMILY
In our sermon last week in the book of Hebrews we learned how Jesus is our Kingly Priest. Recall how Hebrews (Hebrews 1:13; 5:6) takes note of verses one and four of Psalm one hundred and ten: The LORD says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool”; and “The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”
Remember that there is only ONE throne of God and ONLY God sits on the throne. Jesus sits on the ONE throne of God and therefore is God. Jesus is not sitting on a second throne at the right hand of God; rather Jesus is the right hand of God! Jesus thus rules as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Therefore, Hebrews (1:8) sings the words of David about Jesus, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.”
Yet, if Jesus were to rule only as King on the throne of God, he would have to condemn us with his “scepter of uprightness” for all our sin committed in unrighteousness. However, Jesus is not only the King of Righteousness; he is our Great High Priest who washes away our sin with his own blood (Hebrews 2:14-18; 4:14-16; 9:12-14). Therefore, the Hebrew writer declares: “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).
So through the mercy and grace of our King and Great High Priest, Jesus Christ, we have no need of the fear of punishment when approaching the throne of God. Now worthy of further consideration is how we not only approach the throne of God as subjects of the King seeking mercy and grace, we approach the throne of God as family! The Hebrew writer (Hebrews 2:12, 13) echoes the words of Psalms and Isaiah (Psalm 22:22; Isaiah 8:18) concerning how Jesus regards us now: “I will tell of your name to my brothers;” “Behold, I and the children God has given me.”
Jesus is our King, Priest, and Brother! What I encourage you to contemplate today is how forgiveness of sins is not merely a legal transaction or a mere exchange of sacrifice for sin. God does not regard us simply as subjects in need of a legal remedy. God regards us as His children; as younger siblings to our Great High Priest and eldest Brother, Jesus Christ! God regards us now in Jesus as His children in need of care, comfort, and love. In short, we come to God’s throne by love and for love—God is love (1 John 4:16). Therefore, to the worldly, God’s throne will remain a symbol of judgment and condemnation, but to us who know Jesus as Brother, the throne of God is a symbol of home and love.
