FRESH  WATER (1)

Pigs that feast on acorns under an oak tree do not look up to give thanks. They are not aware of the complexities of plant growth and the abundant excess of seeds they see as food. Nor do they see the multipurpose of creation. In our own shallow way we can be much like them. In this issue we will try to exercise our thankfulness, not by looking at acorns, but at what we call fresh water.

We owe the purity of fresh water to the wonders of vaporization. Since all matter can change into gaseous form at some special temperature and pressure, it is possible to separate a given kind of matter from others by manipulating these variables. This is how gasoline and other special liquids are separated from crude oil in “cracking towers.” It also explains how the heat of sunlight can evaporate water, and leave salt and other minerals behind.

However, some aerosols do take wing at nearly the same temperature as water, and are whisked into the atmosphere along with water vapor. One of these is produced by ocean algae whose growth is stimulated with an excess of carbon dioxide - the very gas that is often blamed for global warming. However, this aerosol counters the warming of the atmosphere by having a reflective surface that bounces sunlight back into space. (This happening is just one among many negative feedbacks the Lord has provided to stabilize our environment here on Earth.)

Living creatures, including ourselves, cannot drink very much salt water. Even salt water fish cannot ingest very salty water. Their filtering membranes are not capable of handling more than about 6% salinity. Fortunately the Lord has provided certain sea shells that absorb the excess salinity in the ocean above about 4.3% to accommodate sea life. When the creatures they shelter die and their shells fall to the bottom, the excess salt is removed from the ocean. In fact the history of the salinity of water flowing back into the ocean can be uncovered by measuring the salt content of sea shell layers at the bottom.

In special cases, like the Salton Sea in Southern California, runaway salt content is gradually sterilizing that body of water. Once made up of fresh water, it is becoming increasingly saline due to a lack of sufficient fresh water input. Isolation has not been good for the Salton Sea. Neither is isolation good for people. The church, with its continual input of purified lost souls is God’s answer for keeping Christianity fresh and new.

Since a molecule of water is tri-atomic, in vapor form it is a “greenhouse” gas that absorbs infrared sunlight. As it warms in the atmosphere and becomes lighter than air, it rises to higher climes. At cooler levels, it forms clouds of tiny droplets or snow crystals, and is carried by vortex air currents toward land. The formation of raindrops, snow, or hail is still another complex and wonderful story all by itself. A sequence of special events is necessary for each of these to form and fall, replenishing Earth’s supply of distilled fresh water.

Please pause and take time to be thankful for your next drink of fresh water!
