In Search of Order – part two
Looking down from an airplane, we can easily distinguish random hills and brush land from places where people live. Buildings as well as orderly growing fields betray the presence of man and his marks. Although surveying the countryside is a long way from looking at the subatomic world, both of them give us a chance to spot intelligent design. This writing continues the story of how men found order in the world of atoms and their parts.
Recent news has been full of stories about the finding of the Higgs particle. Like photons of light are stimulated to pop out of electric fields in our light sources by concentrating energy in light-bulb filaments or high voltage in gas filled tubes, the Higgs particle was coaxed into existence by concentrating energy in high speed collisions of protons. Its existence had been predicted by Peter Higgs in 1964 when he identified a missing part of a pattern called the “Standard Model” by physicists. This model catalogues the order in the world of sub-atomic particles, and is a prime example of the extent of order everywhere in the material universe.
The Higgs particle itself is extremely short lived. The reason for excitement over its discovery was that it verified the existence of the Higgs field; that field is the culprit that causes inertia and impedes motion of other particles. It also explains how matter holds together in the material world. (Examples of other invisible fields in nature are the electromagnetic fields that are all around us, or the gravitational field of the Earth.)
With the missing parts of the Standard Model now in place, new families of quarks and leptons are thought to make up matter. Other particles are associated with fields, like the photon or the Higgs. And the scent of still more discovery is in the air. Might it be possible that subatomic particles are composites of still small parts? Several researchers have already made such proposals in detail. (See the Nov. 2012 issue of the Scientific American - page 36.)
Lest we become conceited in our new-found knowledge, it is important to note our ongoing areas of ignorance. As a prime example, we still do not understand how gravity fits into our pictures of other fields and forces. Although Isaac Newton taught us how to deal with gravitational forces mathematically – even to the end of sending men to the moon – we can only guess that there might be “gravitons” like photons of light. When and if we do make such discoveries, the expectation of finding order is likely to be the beacon that will lead us there.
The extent of our ignorance should humble us. Visible matter is estimated to be less than five percent of what is really out there in the cosmos. This is based on measured expansion rates of the star-world and trying to account for the bulk of matter holding everything together – as well as the strange energy that is accelerating the expansion. As covers for our ignorance, we have coined catch-all names like dark energy and dark matter.
In the discovery we have cited, we can see clearly that man was indeed made in the image of God. His intellect is just one of the attributes that make him like his Creator. But we must not make the mistake of worshiping his abilities. For while God is the author of order, man, in his social behavior, is a basket-case of disorder when he acts as if there is no God.

Camp News -- Our theme this year is Remember. This will be our last year at Box R Ranch so it is going to be a special one. We will be remembering all that God has done for us in this special place, as we also parallel that with His commands to Israel to always remember what He had done for them.
Camp Dates Are July 7-13. Camp cost is $165.00 with an early bird discount of $15.00 if your registration is paid in full by June 10th. Registration deadline will be June 25th. Camper ages are: completed third grade through Seniors graduated in 2013. Camp registration forms are available at the information center in the courtyard.
Please make plans to join us for our last year at Box R Ranch - it will be a very special year!
**Camp Fundraiser Dinner is May 17, at 6:00 p.m. in the Fireside Room. We are praying to raise at least $6500.00 to support our last and most memorable year at Box R Ranch. We are planning a fun night for everyone. Please be watching for more details to come.
Camp Kitchen Drive -- This year we will be having a Camp Kitchen Drive. We are asking that all month long you bring in food supplies such as rice, Oreos, spaghetti and large bags of frosted flakes to help with our kitchen costs this year. Donations may be dropped off in the boxes at the back of the auditorium.
VBS will be June 18-21 from 9:00-11:45 a.m. each morning. Contact Denise Beeks if you can help with VBS.
Calling All Parents of Junior and Senior High kids. We will have our Parent Meeting on Sunday, May 19, right after services to give out the summer calendar. Please try to attend. We will cover all events, costs, logistics, etc. We will not be long and you can get on to lunch afterwards.
