IF EVERYTHING WAS EASY
If everything was easy and nothing made us sad,
If everything was easy and nothing turned out bad,
If heartaches never happened and tears would never flow,
We’d stay such little people and never really grow.
If everything was easy and fell into our hands,
If everything was easy and went just like we planned,
We’d take it all for granted and feel no greater gain,
For strength comes when we suffer and wisdom comes from pain.
If everything was easy I’d be no good to you,
For how could I look at your hurt and say I’d been there, too?
I’d be a petty person just an infant all my days,
And I’d never thank my Savior for the sunshine’s golden rays.

YOU ARE INVITED TO AN ELDER’S HOME
At various times in West Main’s history we have had “Dinners for Eight.” Your elders for a time will transform the event to “Dinners for Six”–plus the elder and his wife. The purpose is to provide an occasion for each elder to get closer to each member and for members to get closer with other members. Congregational meetings, special group meetings and even Elders’ Open Houses do not provide much time with each member.
The goal is to have every member in every elder’s home and have every member meet and eat with every other member in the congregation. The events will start in June and continue every month until November, starting again in January 2014. The initiative is planned to last for five years, with reassessment each year. Every member will be invited every four or five months into an elder’s home, depending on the number of elders serving in any given year. It will be a potluck arrangement. When an elder and his wife extend an invitation the item to be brought will be specified.
Nothing can take the place of worshipping together in the presence of the Lord. Nothing can be so precious as serving others together as brothers and sisters. Nothing can be as inspiring as when we study God’s word together. Nothing can ever replace leading souls to Christ together. Any of the multiple events devoted to fellowship are priceless. But the “table-togetherness” in one another’s homes is so personal, so comprehensive and so helpful in being open to one another.
The Elders want to be close to each member, with a wish that every member will be close to every other member of West Main.
